Half-Way Peer Assessment

Audio-Visual Description:

For my audio-visual my concept I hope to convey will be a ‘how to play the opening chords to Kiss Me’ on the guitar, or just how to play the guitar in general. I will aim to shoot this probably in a bedroom to portray a sense of realism and a domesticated setting to align with the independent and budget-friendly themes. I will feature ECU shots of the correct chords and strumming strings of the guitar to emphasise the exact instructions required to play the guitar correctly for the opening lyrics. I will lay dialogue over the top of the video to meet the ‘audio’ requirements and create a virtual connection effect with my fans. Playing a guitar acts as an element of digital convergence in relation to my music video as there are multiple shots featured of myself playing a guitar. I believe that this will be an appropriate concept to film as it would appeal to my target audience and playing the guitar is an accessible skill that should be enjoyed by Jay J fans of the correct demographic.

I would feature Matilda in the video and briefly mention how her guitar playing inspired myself to play, and is very adept with regard to playing this instrument.

NEA: Contact Sheets

These shots were taken on the first day of filming. I am intending to position these shots at the beginning of the video to create a cyclical structure. The opening shot will show a match cut of ‘Kiss Me’ being written in the sand, as well as Milo and Jess walking towards each other along the beach to show a reunion. Furthermore, the footage will conclude with the ending shot of ‘by Jay J’ being etched into the sand, as well as myself playing the guitar but with Milo sat with me on the bench, using an over-the-shoulder cut. I have decided not to use the tennis shots within my music video as it does not suit my narrative, nor does it anchor the lyrics. This means I would not be able to incorporate Andrew Goodwin’s Star theory for a significant proportion of the video.
Actors: Milo and Jess
Locations: Southchurch Ice Cream Parlour, Southchurch Park, beach area next to Thorpe Bay gardens.

These shots anchor the lyrics of ‘We’ll take the trail down by your father’s map’, by showing the couple walking towards the map and history of Southchurch park. Additionally, the zoom-in close up shot of Jess lip-syncing ‘Bring your flower hat’ whilst surrounded by roses is a symbolic code as roses are a typical trope of love and connotes romance between a couple.
Actors: Milo and Jess
Locations: Southchurch park bridge, Southchurch gardens, my friend’s garden for the ‘swing, swing’ lyric where the camera tracks Jess in a swinging motion.
Props for this contact sheet: Matilda’s guitar, flower buckets, Southchurch park map

I was also able to track a swan across the lake in the park to further re-inforce the stereotypical view of love and elegance. There is also a low-angle shot pictured here demonstrating intertextuality. The coming-of-age romance novel explores two lovers who are destined to fall in love but are tragically hindered due to cystic fibrosis. Both of the characters within the book are teenagers so including this novel in the low-angled and then extreme close-up shot would appeal to my music video’s target audience.

These shots were from the second day of filming. The top left shots are what I intend to be my opening shots, although I am reshooting the opening eye-line shot from the tripod’s perspective. This is because the indie, ‘setting up my equipment to shoot the video idea’ did not produce the effect I had anticipated. Milo and Jess filmed the majority of the video’s footage through town, creating realistic and low-budget shots which would resonate strongly with the independent music genre. I also attempted to create a stop-motion effect with the books sold in Waterstones. With this footage I am going to overlay a drawing animation which will outline the shape and colours of each book, cut in between the actual book appears in frame. The bottom row of shots are mostly filler clips to create a candid and authentic feel to the video, but importantly the album covers shown in VHS will link to my 30-second audio-visual interview as to who inspired me to become a music artist. Featuring the Hellfire Club is another intertextual reference featured in my video, with Stranger Things being targeted towards teenagers and young adults, hence suiting my audience profile as well as the OCR Brief.
Locations: The outside of the Royals entrance, interior of Waterstones, pavement by Thorpe Bay gardens
Actors: Milo and Jess
Props:  ‘The Cure’ AC (Album Cover), ‘Hellfire Club’ logo, ‘Bowie’ AC, ‘Metallica’ AC, ‘It Ends With Us’ by Coleen Hoover, ‘The Deal’ by Elle Kennedy, ‘The Summer I turned Pretty’ and ‘It’s Not Summer Without You’ by Jenny Han, ‘The Great Gatsby’ poster (this novel has been turned into a major stage production on the West End so would be a reference enjoyed by fans who are considering the performing arts or music industry as a profession).

These are shots also from the third day of filming.
Locations: VHS, Southend Victoria, train station underpass in town, exterior of Waterstones, car park life, Southchurch park bridge and bench.
Actors: Milo and Jess
Props: Love locket Jellycats, Boots disposable camera, ‘The Mountains’ by Gorillaz AC, ‘Humbug’ by Arctic Monkeys AC, ‘Sawdust’ by The Killers, ‘The Bends’ by Radiohead

These close-up, distorted, over-the-shoulder, framed (voyeuristic effect) and overhead shots were all filmed in the afternoon on the third day of filming.
Locations: Leigh Gardens, Leigh green (open space), gardens overlooking the seafront by Royal Mews.
Actors: Milo and Jess
Props: Notebook and flower stall located in the Royals shopping centre.

Top two rows from the third day of filming and the other three rows are from the fourth
day of filming.
